Sarah Barry’s secret mission reports prior to UBF’s split from the church– part 19

Dear Friends,

Thank God for a bountiful harvest. Work among college students in any country is not easy. Korea is no exception. The fall term has always been a hard one, for athletic events, climbing the glorious Korean mountains, and overabundance of holidays and campus demonstrations make Bible Study and evangelism seem dull. But this fall, a bountiful harvest. Our Chong No Centre, with its creaking floor and sagging roof (supported by innumerable posts) has been overflowing with students eager to study Bible. The overflow has spilled into Mr. Lee’s study, into my room and even into my 3’x8’ “kitchen.” I tried at first to keep my one room free so that the girls, especially medical students, could come by after class and rest of bit before going back to the library to study. But I failed! The demand to study Bible was too insistant! What Happened?It is evident that God’s Spirit is at work among us. These are times of uncertainty. Korea is on the verge of war. There are tight government controls in every area of life and thought. Every man from 15 to 35 is either in the army or is engaged in weekly military training. Thoughtful men and women are looking for personal meaning and for national purpose. The Bible speaks most relevantly to us in these times and God’s Spirit works through His word. [Picture] University Bible Fellowship After the Summer Bible School, in which about 250 Seoul students took part, Mr. Lee and those of us on the staff began looking for a way to encourage students who had not been able to attend. Mr. Lee called in 7 or 8 senior students and held a workshop on Genesis. Each student leader prepared a notebook, complete with questions for homework and 7 full lectures. Then each of these seniors led a similar workshop for 5 or 6 younger leaders. Everyone who studied was to teach someone else. Some of the younger leaders have taught 3 or 4 classmates, one at a time, and almost all of these have in turn taught someone else. The idea of “everyone a learner and everyone a teacher of someone else” caught fire and is still burning. A quiet corner to study. I haven’t written many letters this fall because I have been literally swamped with groups of 2 or 3 studying Genesis. Perhaps some 200 or more have been involved in teaching and studying .In addition to teaching one person Genesis, I have been teaching the Gospel of John to a group of elite ladies in the YWCA once a week and the same gospel to the Young Adult class of Young Nak Presbyterian Church each Sunday morning. The only way to find a quiet corner to study is to utilize the time from 4 to 7 a.m. For prayer.Through these person-to-person Genesis studies, many students who had just been “border-line cases” have made definite decisions to accept Jesus as Savior and Lord. Others have discovered that they can not only be Bible students, but also be Bible teachers and have changed from passive, receiving Christians to active, witnessing Christians.

  1. Will you give thanks to God with us for a bountiful harvest;

  2. And pray for the new Christians, that they may grow in the word of God to Christian maturity;

  3. Pray for me and for our staff here in the Chong No Center, (Director, C.W. Lee; Mr. Chung Il Kim, Senior Staff; Mr. Yong Wha Nah, staff intern) that we may have the wisdom, patience and grace to encourage the students and train them in the word of God;

  4. For adequate space to work and live.

May this holiday season be a joyful time for you as you celebrate the Lord’s birth. Sincerely, Sarah Barry

Commentary:

Mr. Lee called in 7 or 8 senior students and held a workshop on Genesis. Each student leader prepared a notebook, complete with questions for homework and 7 full lectures.

This is how Question sheets were made

The idea of “everyone a learner and everyone a teacher of someone else” caught fire and is still burning.

Actually it is no longer burning rather it is a failing method. The problem is that UBF teacher every generation the same thing when every generation is different.
